Five Languages, Display Settings, and an Honest Note About Translation

Update 0.2.1 puts the shop into German, Spanish and French alongside English and Russian, adds resolution and display mode options, splits interface sound onto its own volume slider, and fixes the shop UI on non-16:9 screens.

Update 0.2.1 is a smaller one than the last, and mostly about reach: the shop now speaks five languages, you can finally tell it what to do with your monitor, and interface sound has stopped riding on the same slider as everything else.

Five languages

The shop now speaks English, Russian, German, Spanish and French.

  • Every menu, item, recipe, contract and line of the Whispering Skull's dialogue is translated. Not a subset, not the menus only.
  • The game reads your system language on first launch and picks the closest match automatically.
  • You can change it any time in Settings, and it sticks.

The honest part

Every language other than English is machine translated and has not yet been reviewed by a native speaker.

I have checked them for the things that break a game: missing text, broken formatting, labels clipped by a button that was sized for English. I have not checked them for the things only a native ear catches, because I do not have five native ears.

So some of it will read stiff, and some of it may read unintentionally funny. If you hit either, tell me. I would rather fix a line than pretend it is fine, and a two-word correction from someone who actually speaks the language is worth more than another pass from me.

Display settings

Resolution and Display Mode are now in Settings, where they should have been.

  • Display Mode covers fullscreen, borderless and windowed.
  • Only the modes your monitor actually reports are offered, so the list is short and everything in it works.
  • A saved resolution is verified on launch. Moving the game to a smaller screen cannot strand the window somewhere you are unable to reach it, which is the failure that makes people reinstall rather than file a bug.

Audio

Interface sound now has its own volume slider, separate from sound effects.

Button clicks were the loudest thing in a quiet shop, and turning them down meant turning down the footsteps, the crafting and the till along with them. Now it does not.

Fixes

  • Fixed the billboard and journal panels overlapping on 16:10 and other non-16:9 displays.
  • Fixed confirmation buttons reading True and False instead of Yes and No.
  • Fixed goods knocked off a shelf sometimes landing behind it.
  • Sped up the customer hit reaction and enlarged the impact effect, so a connecting swing reads as one.
  • Cleaned up a batch of English typos and punctuation across items, contracts and world events.

If a translation reads wrong, or anything else does, come and tell me about it in the Dark Workshop Discord.
